This page gives you the shape of a Macao day trip — ferry options, the 5 must-see spots, the Portuguese egg tart rivalry, Cotai Strip for kids, and a realistic hour-by-hour plan. Before booking, verify: (a) Indian passport entry rules for Macao, (b) TurboJET / Cotai Water Jet schedules and prices for your exact date, (c) whether Day 6 Fri May 8 is best (or shift to Day 7).

01 — Getting Across

The ferry

Three practical ways to reach Macao from Hong Kong. For your family, TurboJET from Sheung Wan is simplest.

Recommended · Simplest
TurboJET
Sheung Wan (HK Macau Ferry Terminal) → Macao Outer Harbour. Most frequent service; every 30 min, 07:00–23:59.
55 min rideHK$170 econDaily
Alternative · Cotai
Cotai Water Jet
Sheung Wan → Taipa Ferry Terminal. Better if your plan is Cotai Strip (Venetian / Parisian) — drops you on the casino side.
55 minHK$175Every 30 min
Bus · Bridge
HZMB Bridge Bus
From Kowloon to HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge → bus to Macao. Cheaper but involves 3 immigration checks.
~1 hrHK$6524/7

Book return tickets the same day you book outbound — the last ferry back typically leaves Macao around 23:30. For your family of 4, TurboJET economy both ways = ~HK$1,360 ≈ ₹15,000. Kids under 12 get a small discount.

02 — Must-See

The highlights

Tap any card for Google Maps. UNESCO heritage north; Cotai Strip mega-resorts south; quiet villages on the edges.

A
UNESCO Heritage世遺
Macao Peninsula. Walkable cluster — do these on foot in 3 hours.
B
Cotai Strip · Family-friendly路氹金光大道
Free to walk through. You don't need to enter casinos — go for the atrium spectacle.
C
Villages · Quiet side舊城區
The Macao that tourists miss. Cobblestone lanes, pastel houses, no buses.
03 — Eat

Egg tarts & pork chop buns

Macao is culturally Portuguese + Chinese + Macanese. Three things to eat before the ferry back.

Lord Stow's Bakery 安德魯餅店
The ORIGINAL Portuguese egg tart (pastel de nata) — this location in Coloane is the source. Warm, caramelized top.
7am–10pmColoanepilgrimage
Margaret's Cafe e Nata 瑪嘉烈蛋撻
The rival egg tart. Run by Lord Stow's ex-wife. Crisper pastry, equally famous. On Macao Peninsula — more convenient.
Best 9am–2pmPeninsulapilgrimage
Tai Lei Loi Kei 大利來記
Legendary Macanese pork chop bun (豬扒包) — pan-fried marinated pork in a crusty Portuguese bun. Simple, iconic.
8am–6pmTaipa Village
Restaurante Litoral 海灣餐廳
Classic Macanese sit-down: African chicken, Portuguese sardines, bacalhau (salt cod). Taipa Village setting.
12pm–3pm lunchTaipa
Fernando's 法蘭度餐廳
Beachside Portuguese institution — since 1986. Grilled sardines, garlic prawns, suckling pig. Splurge lunch if you have time.
12pm–9:30pmHac Sa Beach, Coloane
Wong Chi Kei 黃枝記粥麵
Since 1946. Handmade bamboo-pressed noodles + shrimp-roe won ton. On Senado Square itself.

04 — Hour by Hour

A realistic day

Peninsula heritage in the morning, Taipa lunch, Cotai Strip afternoon for the kids. Back to HK by dinner.

07:30

Breakfast at hotel · leave for ferry

Light breakfast. Taxi or MTR to Sheung Wan (Exit D) → HK Macau Ferry Terminal. Passports & return tickets in hand.

08:30

TurboJET ferry · HK → Macao Outer Harbour

55-minute ride. Kids can explore the ferry. Watch for the HK-Zhuhai-Macao bridge halfway across.

09:45

Arrive Outer Harbour · Macao immigration

Check visa rules for Indian passport beforehand. Free shuttle buses to casinos from the pier, or taxi to Senado Square (~HK$50).

10:30

Senado Square & Ruins of St Paul's walk

Cobblestone plaza → St Dominic's Church → climb narrow Rua da Palha → Ruins of St Paul's (THE photo) → Monte Fort behind it.

12:30

Taxi to Taipa Village · lunch

Restaurante Litoral OR Tai Lei Loi Kei pork chop bun (if you want quick). Wander Taipa's yellow colonial lanes afterwards.

14:30

Cotai Strip — kids' highlight

17:30

Margaret's Cafe e Nata · egg tart stop

Back on the Peninsula (taxi from Cotai ~HK$50). Warm egg tart before the return.

19:00

Ferry back to HK · Sheung Wan

05 — Do Not Skip

Watch-outs

Passport + visa

Indian passport: verify Macao entry rules BEFORE booking. Rules can differ from HK's 14-day visa-free entry — research separately.

Book return ferry same day

Return seats can sell out on popular days. Book both ways at once. Last TurboJET back ~23:30.

No MTR in Macao

LRT only covers Taipa/Cotai. Taxis and free casino shuttles fill the gap. Have HK$ / MOP cash — not all taxis take card.

HK dollar works

HKD is widely accepted 1:1 but official currency is Macanese Pataca (MOP). Change leftover MOP before the ferry back — no takers in HK.

Kids in casinos

Under-21s can walk through hotel atriums and restaurants freely. They CANNOT enter the gaming floor (strict). Stick to canals, fountains, food courts.

Long single day

12+ hours door-to-door. Pack water, snacks, change of socks. Daughter (8) will flag around 6 PM — have the egg tart stop ready as a morale boost.

Alternative: stay overnight

If this feels rushed, consider 1 night in Macao instead. Hotels on Cotai are cheaper Sun–Thu. Trade one HK night for it.

Weather contingency

May typhoon risk is low but possible. TurboJET suspends in Signal 8 winds. Check weather the morning of.
