Airport Express → Kowloon Station → transfer → Mong Kok East

Fastest published rail option. Airport Express takes you to Kowloon Station in ~22 minutes, then you transfer onward.

• Trains run frequently all day (headway ~10 min)
• From Kowloon Station: MTR to Mong Kok East requires a change — the simplest way is free shuttle (see below) or taxi

Airport → Tsing Yi → Central → Prince Edward (~58 min)

Cheapest rail option but ~58 min door to door with 2+ changes. Would NOT recommend with 4 people + luggage on Day 1.

Airport Taxi Red-Urban → 193 Prince Edward Rd West

Mong Kok is served by Red Urban taxis (red with cream roof on Hong Kong Island / Kowloon).

• Flagfall rate (first 2 km): HK$29 (effective July 14, 2024)
• +HK$2.10 per 200 m thereafter until 9 km; then HK$1.40 per 200 m
• Airport → Mong Kok via tunnel is ~35-40 km. Realistic fare to hotel: HK$350–420 including tunnel toll (~HK$50)
• Luggage surcharge: HK$6 per bag in the trunk

Royal Plaza Hotel location

Per the hotel's own page: "Royal Plaza Hotel is steps from Mong Kok East MTR Station (MOKO), and it's 45 minutes to HK International Airport."

Adult On-Loan Octopus 八達通

The normal card Hongkongers use. Refundable. Get 4 — one per family member

• Buy price: HK$150 (HK$50 deposit + HK$100 usable balance)
• Child Octopus (3–11 years) for your daughter: same HK$150 structure but with concessionary fares ~50% off on MTR
• Your son (13): adult card · Child Octopus is for ages 3–11 only
• Refund on departure: full HK$50 deposit + remaining balance returned at any MTR Customer Service Centre or airport counter
• Admin fee: HK$9 deducted if the card is returned within 3 months of issue. After 3 months — no fee.

Tourist Octopus (Sold version) 遊客八達通

Cheaper buy-in, card cost itself isn't refundable but remaining balance is.

• Cost: HK$39 (non-refundable) + top up as needed
• Available at 7-Eleven stores or MTR Ticket & Octopus Selling Machines at HKIA
• Sold as a souvenir — balance refundable, but you keep the card

Airport purchase points

• Airport Express Customer Service Centre — before you tap in for the train (airport side)
• Any MTR Customer Service Centre — you can also buy after arriving in town
• 7-Eleven at the airport — Tourist Octopus only

Mong Kok East ≠ Mong Kok MTR

Royal Plaza is above Mong Kok East station, which is on the East Rail Line (blue colour on the map). That line goes north to Sha Tin, Hung Hom, and the mainland border.

For 90% of tourist trips (TST, Central, Causeway Bay, Disneyland) you want the Tsuen Wan Line (red). To reach it, walk 5–7 minutes to either Prince Edward or Mong Kok MTR station — these are different stations from Mong Kok East.

Tourist Day Pass 旅客八達通

24 consecutive hours of unlimited travel on MTR, Light Rail, and MTR Bus.

• Excluded: Airport Express, East Rail Line First Class, travel to/from Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau (the border stations)
• Eligibility: Non-residents who have been in HK less than 14 days. Valid passport required at purchase.
• Starts on first tap — not purchase time
• Available at HKIA, MTR Customer Service Centres, and some 7-Elevens

Mong Kok → Disneyland Resort

Per Hong Kong Disneyland's own transport FAQ + MTR Disneyland Resort Line page:

• Walk to Mong Kok MTR (Tsuen Wan Line red)
• Tsuen Wan Line south to Lai King station
• Change to Tung Chung Line (orange) going toward Tung Chung
• Ride 1 stop to Sunny Bay station
• Change to Disneyland Resort Line (pink, themed Mickey trains)
• 3.3 km, 6 min, HK$7.50 to Disneyland Resort station
• 2-min walk to park entrance

Disneyland Resort Line hours: from Sunny Bay 05:59 – 01:20 · from Disneyland 06:10 – 00:59. Last train back matters — don't miss the last Disneyland-side departure.

Star Ferry Central ↔ Tsim Sha Tsui 天星小輪

• Upper Deck fare (TST ↔ Central): HK$3.70
• Crossing time: ~9 minutes
• Hours: 06:30 – 23:30 daily (TST ↔ Central route)
• Also operates: Wan Chai ↔ TST route

Pay with Octopus or cash at the turnstile. This is transport AND a photo opportunity.

Taxis · cheap by world standards

Three colours: Red (Urban — HK Island + Kowloon, where you'll be), Green (New Territories), Blue (Lantau).

• Red Urban flagfall: HK$29 (first 2 km included, effective July 14, 2024)
• After 2 km: +HK$2.10 per 200 m
• After 9 km: rate reduces to +HK$1.40 per 200 m
• Luggage: HK$6 per piece in the trunk
• Waiting: ~HK$52/hour
• Cross-harbour tunnel toll: paid by passenger (HK$10–50 depending on tunnel)

HK Tramways 叮叮

• HK Island only — northern shore, Kennedy Town ↔ Shau Kei Wan. Does NOT serve Kowloon.
• Flat fare: HK$3.00 adult, HK$1.50 child — pay when you exit (not enter)
• Octopus accepted
• Pace: slow. Take it for the experience, not for speed.

Buses fill the gaps

• Comprehensive network covers places MTR doesn't (Stanley, Shek O, Repulse Bay, Aberdeen)
• Fares range HK$4–50 depending on distance
• Octopus accepted on all franchised buses
• Airport buses (A-series) from HKIA to most districts: HK$33 to Mong Kok on Bus A21

Peak Tram · Garden Road ↔ The Peak

• Tram only (single): HK$88 adult / HK$44 child
• Tram + Sky Terrace 428 combo: HK$148 adult / HK$74 child
• Queue can be 1+ hour on weekends. Book fast-track tickets online.

PAR for Indian Nationals — required

Per HK Immigration Department: "Indian nationals must apply for and successfully complete pre-arrival registration online before they can visit or transit the HKSAR visa-free."

• Cost: Free of charge
• Validity: 6 months from issue. Multiple visits allowed within that window.
• Each visit max stay: 14 days visa-free
• Processing: Usually near-instant (seconds to minutes) for most applicants
• Not required: For passengers in direct airside transit only (not leaving the airport transit zone)

TurboJET Sheung Wan ↔ Macau Outer Harbour

The most established ferry route. Best for historic Macau Peninsula (Senado Square, Ruins of St Paul's).

• Route: Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal (Sheung Wan MTR, Exit D) ↔ Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal (Peninsula side)
• Crossing time: ~55 minutes
• First HK departure: ~07:30 · Last HK departure: ~23:00
• Frequency: ~142 weekly sailings (≈ every 30–60 min peak)
• Fare (economy one-way): varies HK$170–183 depending on day / peak

TurboJET or Cotai Water Jet · Sheung Wan ↔ Taipa Ferry Terminal

Drops you at Pac On Terminal (Taipa), right next to the Cotai Strip casinos. Better if your Macau day is casino-focused.

• Crossing time: ~55 minutes (similar)
• Fares: similar to Outer Harbour route
• From Taipa Terminal: free casino shuttles, LRT Taipa Line, or taxi

HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Shuttle Bus 港珠澳大橋穿梭巴士

55 km undersea tunnel + bridge. Cheapest cross-border, but requires getting to the HK boundary facility first.

• Fare: HK$65 daytime (06:00–23:59) · HK$70 overnight (00:00–05:59)
• Frequency: Peak every 5 min · Off-peak 10–15 min · Overnight 15–30 min
• Service: 24 hours
• Runs between: Only the HK Port ↔ Macau Port (boundary crossings). You must get to HK Port first (Tung Chung area).
• Catch: You pass 3 immigration counters (HK exit, bridge, Macau entry)

30-day visa-free entry for Indian nationals

Per Macau's immigration policy: Indian passport holders travelling to Macau for less than 30 days do not require a visa.

• Visa-free stay: up to 30 days per visit
• Passport validity: must be valid 6+ months beyond arrival date
• Onward ticket: required — show return ferry ticket to HK or onward flight
• Proof of funds: you may be asked. Credit card usually sufficient.
• Accommodation: hotel booking or host invitation letter
• Purpose: Tourism only. Employment not allowed visa-free.

Free shuttle buses FREE

Every major integrated resort runs free air-conditioned buses from the arrival points (ferry terminals, HZMB border, airport) to their hotels. You can board without being a guest — they don't check.

• Wynn Macau / Wynn Palace: Ferry Terminal run 09:00–20:45 (shuttle to ferry side); 10:00–23:00 (to Wynn)
• The Venetian Macao · Taipa Ferry route: daytime 06:35/07:25 – 22:35/23:05 – 23:35 (every 5–15 min) + overnight 00:05–00:35 every 15 min
• Galaxy Macau · Taipa Ferry route: every 15–20 min · 10:00 – 20:30
• City of Dreams, MGM, Parisian, Grand Lisboa, Sands: similar schedules

Macau Light Rapid Transit 澳門輕軌

Macau's only rail system. Does not serve the Peninsula historic area — skips Ruins of St Paul's, Senado Square, A-Ma Temple. Covers Taipa + Cotai + airport + Taipa Ferry Terminal.

• Fare: MOP 6 for up to 3 stations, +MOP 1 per 3 additional stations
• Most journeys: MOP 6–10
• Cash not accepted — need Macau Pass or contactless payment
• Useful for: Airport → Cotai, Taipa Ferry → Cotai
• Not useful for: reaching Peninsula UNESCO sights

Macau public buses 澳門巴士

• Cash fare (flat): MOP 6.00 — exact change only, no refunds
• With Macau Pass: MOP 3.00 regular routes, MOP 4.00 express routes
• Macau Pass (local Octopus): MOP 130 initial buy-in (MOP 100 stored value + MOP 30 service fee, non-refundable)
• Routes cover everywhere including Peninsula
• For 1-day trip with cash: carry a pocketful of MOP 6 exact-change coins

Macau taxis 的士

Black with cream roof (standard) or blue/red (special radio taxis).

• Flag fall (first 1,600 m): MOP 21.00
• +MOP 2.00 per 220 m thereafter
• Waiting: MOP 2.00 per 55 seconds at passenger's request
• Surcharge MOP 8.00 when boarding at airport / Taipa Ferry Terminal / Hengqin / HZMB Macau island

Macau Peninsula is walkable

The UNESCO heritage cluster on the Peninsula is genuinely small. From Ruins of St Paul's to A-Ma Temple is ~30–40 min walk on flat cobblestones. Stick to the Peninsula in the morning, use free shuttles to get to Cotai after lunch.

Pataca vs Hong Kong Dollar

• Official currency: Macanese Pataca (MOP)
• HKD widely accepted at ~1:1 ratio in casinos, larger shops, restaurants
• HKD often refused or rounded for taxis, small shops, bus fareboxes — have MOP for these
• Exchange MOP before leaving — HK banks don't exchange Pataca easily
