HK 01 — Arrival

HKIA Royal Plaza

You land 9 AM on Day 1 (Sun May 3). You need to reach Mong Kok East. Three real options, with trade-offs.

Option A · MTR Airport Express + onward MTR

Airport Express → Kowloon Station → transfer → Mong Kok East

Fastest published rail option. Airport Express takes you to Kowloon Station in ~22 minutes, then you transfer onward.

The Airport Express used to run a FREE hotel shuttle bus from Kowloon/HK Station to major hotels (including Royal Plaza). It was discontinued on 30 June 2020 due to COVID-19 and has NOT returned in its previous form. In July 2024 MTR began promoting private shuttle operators that use the same bus bays.
Option B · Full MTR via Tung Chung Line

Airport → Tsing Yi → Central → Prince Edward (~58 min)

Cheapest rail option but ~58 min door to door with 2+ changes. Would NOT recommend with 4 people + luggage on Day 1.

Option C · Taxi · recommended for Day 1 with luggage

Airport Taxi Red-Urban → 193 Prince Edward Rd West

Mong Kok is served by Red Urban taxis (red with cream roof on Hong Kong Island / Kowloon).

With 4 people + luggage on Day 1, a single taxi at ~HK$380 (≈₹4,200) beats 4 × Airport Express tickets (HK$460) + shuttle/MTR/walk hassle. Grab a taxi at the airport taxi queue — safe, metered, zero English required, just show them "Royal Plaza Hotel, 193 Prince Edward Road West, Mongkok" written down.

Royal Plaza Hotel location

Per the hotel's own page: "Royal Plaza Hotel is steps from Mong Kok East MTR Station (MOKO), and it's 45 minutes to HK International Airport."

HK 02 — Octopus Card

The one card for everything

Buy this first thing at the airport. Pays for MTR, buses, trams, Star Ferry, 7-Eleven, supermarkets, most taxis. Tap in, tap out.

Option 1 · Standard / On-Loan Octopus

Adult On-Loan Octopus 八達通

The normal card Hongkongers use. Refundable. Get 4 — one per family member

For an 8-day trip, the HK$9 early-return fee applies. Budget for that — on 4 cards it's HK$36 total. Worth it for the 3 full months of convenience, but if you'll really never return, use the Tourist Octopus instead.
Option 2 · Tourist Octopus (Sold)

Tourist Octopus (Sold version) 遊客八達通

Cheaper buy-in, card cost itself isn't refundable but remaining balance is.

HK 03 — The MTR System

The metro

11 lines, clean, air-conditioned, English signs everywhere. Your default mode of transport.

Your hotel's station quirk

Mong Kok East ≠ Mong Kok MTR

Royal Plaza is above Mong Kok East station, which is on the East Rail Line (blue colour on the map). That line goes north to Sha Tin, Hung Hom, and the mainland border.

For 90% of tourist trips (TST, Central, Causeway Bay, Disneyland) you want the Tsuen Wan Line (red). To reach it, walk 5–7 minutes to either Prince Edward or Mong Kok MTR station — these are different stations from Mong Kok East.

Internalize this on Day 1. The two "Mong Kok" stations confuse first-time visitors. The one under your hotel is on the blue (East Rail) line; the red (Tsuen Wan) line you'll use most is a short walk away.
MTR Tourist Day Pass — consider for heavy days

Tourist Day Pass 旅客八達通

24 consecutive hours of unlimited travel on MTR, Light Rail, and MTR Bus.

For your itinerary, the Tourist Day Pass is worth it on the Disneyland day only if you make 4+ MTR trips that day. Otherwise, Octopus pay-as-you-go is simpler. Mong Kok → TST single fare is ~HK$5, so 4 round-trip journeys would cost ~HK$40 with Octopus — day pass only wins if you go further/more.
Disneyland route — verified

Mong Kok → Disneyland Resort

Per Hong Kong Disneyland's own transport FAQ + MTR Disneyland Resort Line page:

Disneyland Resort Line hours: from Sunny Bay 05:59 – 01:20 · from Disneyland 06:10 – 00:59. Last train back matters — don't miss the last Disneyland-side departure.

HK 04 — Other Transport

Ferry · tram · taxi · bus

Not everything is MTR. These fill the gaps the metro misses.

Star Ferry · verified fares

Star Ferry Central ↔ Tsim Sha Tsui 天星小輪

Pay with Octopus or cash at the turnstile. This is transport AND a photo opportunity.

HK Taxi · Red Urban rates

Taxis · cheap by world standards

Three colours: Red (Urban — HK Island + Kowloon, where you'll be), Green (New Territories), Blue (Lantau).

Typical taxi fares from hotel: Mong Kok → TST ≈ HK$70 · Mong Kok → Central (via tunnel) ≈ HK$130 · Mong Kok → Ocean Park ≈ HK$250. Pay with cash or Octopus (most urban red taxis accept Octopus now). Tip ~10% or round up.
Double-decker tram ("Ding Ding")

HK Tramways 叮叮

City Bus + KMB

Buses fill the gaps

For a south-side Ocean Park or Stanley day, bus is often better than MTR + transfer. Check the route on Google Maps — it tells you the exact bus number and stop.
Peak Tram · separate ticket

Peak Tram · Garden Road ↔ The Peak

NOT covered by Octopus. Separate tourist ticket. For the view without the queue, see Lugard Road Loop in Spots §F.

HK 05 — Indian Passport

Pre-Arrival Registration

Indian nationals must complete Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) online before flying to HK, or boarding will be refused.

Official policy · HK Immigration Department

PAR for Indian Nationals — required

Per HK Immigration Department: "Indian nationals must apply for and successfully complete pre-arrival registration online before they can visit or transit the HKSAR visa-free."

Before boarding and at HK immigration, you MUST carry: (1) the PAR notification slip AND (2) the exact same passport that was linked to the PAR. Different passport = refusal of boarding AND refusal of entry. Apply PAR at least a few days before flight for safety even though most approvals are instant.
Apply for PAR

Where to apply

Apply via the HK Immigration Department's official online portal. Do not use third-party sites that charge fees.

XB 06 — HK → Macau

Three ways across

The 65 km gap between HK and Macau. Options ranked by simplicity for your family.

Recommended · Option 1

TurboJET Sheung Wan ↔ Macau Outer Harbour

The most established ferry route. Best for historic Macau Peninsula (Senado Square, Ruins of St Paul's).

Book return same day as outbound. Last HK-bound ferry typically ~23:30 from Macau. The website turbojet.com.hk shows live schedule + prices for your exact date.
Option 2 · Same ferry operator, Cotai side

TurboJET or Cotai Water Jet · Sheung Wan ↔ Taipa Ferry Terminal

Drops you at Pac On Terminal (Taipa), right next to the Cotai Strip casinos. Better if your Macau day is casino-focused.

Option 3 · HZMB Gold Bus (cheapest)

HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Shuttle Bus 港珠澳大橋穿梭巴士

55 km undersea tunnel + bridge. Cheapest cross-border, but requires getting to the HK boundary facility first.

The Gold Bus does NOT go from Mong Kok/TST. You need to take Bus B6 or equivalent from HK city to HK Port first (adds ~45 min + HK$35). Cheaper in total but slower and more steps. For a family of 4, the ferry is simpler.

MO 07 — Indian Passport

Macau visa-free for Indians

Official policy · Macau visa policy

30-day visa-free entry for Indian nationals

Per Macau's immigration policy: Indian passport holders travelling to Macau for less than 30 days do not require a visa.

Unlike Hong Kong, Macau does NOT require pre-arrival registration for Indian passports. Just show up with passport, return ticket, and be able to answer standard tourist questions.
MO 08 — Getting Around Macau

The casino shuttle trick

Macau has no metro that's useful for tourists. The LRT only covers Taipa/Cotai. The hack is free casino shuttles — use them even if you're not a casino guest.

THE hack · free casino shuttles

Free shuttle buses FREE

Every major integrated resort runs free air-conditioned buses from the arrival points (ferry terminals, HZMB border, airport) to their hotels. You can board without being a guest — they don't check.

The Cotai Strip casinos are walkable to each other (Vegas-style interconnected resorts). So: take a casino shuttle TO Cotai, walk between resorts there, then take a shuttle OUT to the ferry terminal. Zero Macau transport cost for a full Cotai day.
Option 2 · Macau LRT (limited usefulness)

Macau Light Rapid Transit 澳門輕軌

Macau's only rail system. Does not serve the Peninsula historic area — skips Ruins of St Paul's, Senado Square, A-Ma Temple. Covers Taipa + Cotai + airport + Taipa Ferry Terminal.

Option 3 · Public buses · comprehensive

Macau public buses 澳門巴士

For a day trip, the Macau Pass math usually doesn't pay back. Use cash with exact change, or taxis. For a multi-day stay, buy a pass.
Option 4 · Taxi

Macau taxis 的士

Black with cream roof (standard) or blue/red (special radio taxis).

Beware unofficial "black taxis" at ferry terminals that refuse the meter and quote flat rates. Always insist on meter (or walk to the proper taxi stand). HKD is sometimes accepted but drivers prefer MOP — carry MOP 200–500 cash.
Option 5 · Walking (Peninsula)

Macau Peninsula is walkable

The UNESCO heritage cluster on the Peninsula is genuinely small. From Ruins of St Paul's to A-Ma Temple is ~30–40 min walk on flat cobblestones. Stick to the Peninsula in the morning, use free shuttles to get to Cotai after lunch.
